Sorry Kramer!
Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few days you know
about Michael Richards and his tirade at an L.A. comedy show.
Apparently while doing his comedy act Michael Richards, alias Kramer on
Seinfeld, was getting heckled by some people in the audience. Rather
than acting like the professional he is supposed to be he just went wild
and starting using profanity and racial slurs.
One has to wonder what would cause such behavior but if one looks at his
past it should not be very surprising. This is not the first time that
Richards has displayed questionable behavior.
He was supposed to be the star of a Seinfeld spin-off but apparently
that was too much for him to handle. He made a few shows and then
decided to just quit. The show was cancelled and his reputation damaged.
But nothing he did then would or could foretell what he did this time.
Cursing and shouting racial slurs is hardly the expected behavior of a
seasoned comedian. I mean after all they are supposed to be used to
working in front of the public and things don't always go well. They are
supposed to handle it better than he did. He could have made a joke to
the heckler to make the audience laugh and then hopefully shut up the
heckler. But of course this was way too much for Richards.
Instead he used the famous "N" word referring to certain black people in
the audience. He further aggravated the situation by saying that "50
years ago we would have had you swinging from a tree upside down."
Now for sure Richards has apologized but I for one do not forgive him.
His apology may have sounded sincere, "I was at a comedy club trying to
do my act, and I got heckled and I took it badly and went into a rage,"
he said. "For me to be in a comedy club and flip out and say this crap,
I'm deeply, deeply sorry. I'm not a racist. That's what's so insane
about this", but I don't buy it.
If there's one thing that I am sure of its that when people get angry
their true feeling come out. It is then that they really speak what is
on their mind without considering the consequences. It is what a lawyer
would call an "excited utterance." And for that very reason it is
permitted in a court of law. The person making the utterance does so
without considering the consequences. They say what is really on their
mind and now we all know what is on Richards' mind. That would be anger
and racism.
Truth is he is just a washed up actor and a racist to boot. Seinfeld is
over and so is his career. And now instead of being remembered for his
acting on Seinfeld he will be remembered for his racial comments and
profanity laced tirade.
I would like to say that I feel sorry for him but I would be lying.
Funny thing though. I guess he really is a comedian because his supposed
apology really did make me laugh.
